The study analyses the distinct contributions of women to the work of Charter 77 and emphasises its intellectual dimension. An important space for women to develop their own strategies was that of the apartment communities (or ‘salons’), which were primarily organised by women, combining the role of organiser and intellectual in one person. The study also examines these women’s reflections on their involvement in the work of this human rights initiative and the community that formed around it from the start. An important issue is their experience with repression and imprisonment – whether of them personally or of their partners. Using specific examples, it shows how extreme life situations often opened up space for self-fulfilment and how it was often utilised creatively. For structural reasons, women’s involvement in the work of Charter 77 took a different form from that of men. However, their intellectual contribution was equally significant, though we do not have enough sources or texts to compile a ‘Charter 77 canon’. Women played a role in the intellectual side of the Charter community and its written output as co-authors, editors, archivists, and translators, and of course also as typists, a role, however, that is frequently mentioned.
