Call for abstracts for the special issue Gender Reflections on the (Post)Pandemic (in) Central and Eastern Europe

Gender and Research announces a call for abstracts for the thematic issues Gender Reflections on the (Post)Pandemic (in) Central and Eastern Europe, which will be edited by Radka Dudová, Éva Fodor and Iva Šmídová.

The suggested topic of the special issue tackles the reflection of the recent experience of life under the pandemic (COVID-19) and period following it by concentrating on its gender dimension. The pandemic has had an ultimate impact on gendered structures and practices. Gendered perspectives, theories and empirical analysis are needed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the impact it has on individuals and its complex consequences on social reproduction, labour markets, new private/public dynamics, health and quality of life in general. The special issue aims to target questions that require rethinking and re-examination in the light of recent developments connected with the “Corona crisis”, such as private/public divide and conflusion; de/instututionalisation of care and education; health; politics of gender and sexuality under the lockdown; generational divide and solidarity; inequalities, etc.

Topical journal issues covering this phenomenon are currently flourishing, yet the international, cross-border dimension has not yet been addressed in more detail. The region of the Central and Eastern Europe provides an array of themes for potential future comparisons, analysing relevant themes in their local cultural contexts or already in a comparative way stressing similarities and differences. Thus critical reflection beyond the borders of the nation states, yet with region specific perspectives is relevant and underexplored so far. The themes of how the pandemic has affected and perhaps transformed migration and relevant relations of care, work or interpersonal ones, or gendered dimensions of global risks deepened by the pandemic, and our understanding of how health and health care (systems) are gendered, among others, desire recognition and analyses in academic journals.

Interdisciplinary approaches targeting primarily social impacts of the pandemic, yet in an intersectional and transdisciplinary approach, are especially welcome. Gender should form one of the core axes of such reflections.

If you are interested in publishing in the special issue, please submit an abstract for your paper (max. 250 words) by January 15, 2022 to the editor’s office (genderteam[at]soc.cas.cz) and to the visiting editors: krizala[at]fss.muni.cz; radka.dudova[at]soc.cas.cz. Include “Pandemic in CEE” in the e-mail’s subject. Contributions in Czech, Slovak, and English will be accepted. Guidelines for publishing articles in English are available at: https://www.genderonline.cz/en/page/4-submission-guidelines.

You will be notified about the acceptance of your abstract by the end of February. We expect the final version to be submitted by September 1, 2022. We also welcome book reviews and reports relevant to the topic of the forthcoming issue. The special issue will be released in mid-2023.
